AI and UK business growth: what the latest ONS figures mean
The latest ONS data points to activity in AI and cloud computing. Here is what growing businesses can take from it—and what the figures cannot tell us.
What the figures say
In its September 2026 estimate, the Office for National Statistics reported that UK computer programming, consultancy and related activities grew by 3.5% in July and by 4.4% over the three months to July. The ONS also noted that many of the businesses reporting the highest turnover in some related activities were involved in artificial intelligence and cloud computing.
The ONS is clear that its data cannot quantify the exact effect of AI and cloud computing on turnover. These figures show activity in the wider sector; they do not prove that AI caused the growth or that every business adopting AI will see the same result.
A useful signal, not a reason to rush
For a growing business, the practical message is to look for a real operational problem where a focused AI trial could help. Start with a repeated task, such as preparing first drafts, sorting enquiries or summarising information, and define what a worthwhile improvement would look like.
- Record the time, cost or error rate before the trial.
- Use approved tools and keep confidential information protected.
- Have a person check outputs before they affect customers or decisions.
- Compare the results after a short, controlled pilot.
Turn interest into evidence
A small, measured improvement gives you a stronger basis for deciding whether to continue, change the workflow or stop. It also helps your team understand where AI is useful in your business, rather than relying on broad claims about what the technology can do.
